Restaurant Review: Tao Chen's, Chesterton, IN

Tao Chen's
532  Indian Boundary Road
Chesterton, IN 46304
(219) 926-2542

Dine in or take-out. Closed Monday’s.

Frankly, I am no expert on Chinese food and I have no idea how to tell the difference between the many rich and complex sub-cuisines that make up what we, in America, lump together as “Chinese” food. Maybe, just maybe I can detect well prepared Chinese food from indifferently prepared dishes.

Tao Chen's is not your typical Chinese restaurant. The décor is a sleek and tasteful blend of East meets West that is very attractive.  Lighting is low and seating ranges from intimate booths to more open tables.  Dress is casual, but wait staff is uniformed which is a nice, classy touch.

Portions are generous.  Every dish I have tried seems well prepared and tastes very good.  Tao Chen's does not overdo the salt.  The egg rolls are on the small side but you don’t mind because the main dish will fill you. If you like curry, I recommend the Curry Chicken.

Service has always been superb. Prices are not cheap but not too high either – call it mid-range for NW Indiana, and a good value at that.

The Beer list is not huge, but a good range of excellent Chinese beers can be had at a reasonable price. Domestic beers are also available.

It is going to be tough to find a better Chinese restaurant in Porter County.  Tao Chen's is a favourite.
